The loss of a grand old tree

Posted on: July 26th, 2011 in Roadways and Waysides |

Today we mourn the loss of one of our Heritage Trees. The Barlow Road Tollgate Big Leaf Maple was badly decayed and posed a threat to passing motorists. There is one bright spot: several “sprouts” at the base of the tree were preserved. Daniel Parker (the original Barlow Rd tollgate keeper) planted the tree 130 years ago. A good long life!

If you would like more information on how it went, KATU has footage of the removal.
